Week 3 of school

Luke is doing just fabulous at school! And I guess they do know a thing or two about potty training... Luke will now use the potty when I ask him to, and last night he even recognized that he needed to go # 2 and ran into the bathroom and went on the potty!! He still needs to learn to feel when he needs to go # 1, but I definitely see some progress!! WOO HOO!!

The only thing I don't like about having him in school all day is that I don't feel like I spend much time with him during the week - the evenings are all about eating and bathing and getting ready for bed. But it makes me appreciate the weekends more!

Week 2 of school

I am actually looking forward to springing forward at daylight savings time - sick huh? But Luke's internal alarm clock goes off at 6:00 / 6:30 AM anyway, so at least after DST he'll be getting up at 7:00 AM!!

For such an early riser, Luke is not much of a morning person - even his teachers say so. I have always noticed that he is a little cranky in the morning and happy happy after his nap - this is true at school also. He is very sad in the morning when I drop him off. I have tried taking LuLu with us, but that doesn't help. I even sent Daddy to drop him off, but I think that made him really mad. Yikes. Surely he'll get used to the routine eventually.

He's always in a great mood and very busy when I pick him up, so I know he is enjoying himself. And boy has he started talking! And counting to three. I didn't realize how much influence other kids would be on talking - I guess they talk slower than adults and use words that he can actually imitate. His class has children from 18 months to 3 years old, so I think he's definitely benefiting from watching and hearing the older kids.

Luke's teacher asked me to make some aprons for the kids - each one is for a different activity... orange/yellow for wiping the table, black/white for polishing the mirror, blue clouds for washing the window, green/yellow for watering the plants. And I have some fabric on the way with utensils on it for setting the table. The aprons are used to teach the children to take turns with each activity - the child wearing the apron is the one doing the activity, and when they're done they take off the apron and another child may start the activity. Too cute!!

School updates from his teacher

DAY 2:

Luke had a good day today. Sometimes it takes a day or so for things to sink in. I think the reality hit him today. He got some extra TLC from all of us (and even from some of the children). I showed him how to get a banana for a snack in the morning, and he enjoyed that. He also spent some more time at the sink. He really enjoyed cleaning the window in our front door, and did that for a long time. We had pasta, corn, broccoli, apples and biscuits, but he only wanted to eat corn, so we gave him lots. He was laying down for nap when I left.

DAY 3:

Luke had a great day today. He was a little sad when he first arrived, but cheered up within just a minute or so, and was busy the rest of the day. He had a lesson on wiping a table, and even helped set the table for lunch! He played in the backyard with another of our younger boys named Aiden, and they had a wonderful time together. He was very talkative today, too. We had pasta with cheese and green beans for lunch. He ate more than he did yesterday, but cleared his plate pretty quickly. Next week, I will work with him trying to get him to sit at the table a little longer at lunchtime. He took a good nap today.

DAY 4:

Luke had another great day to round out the week. There was adifferent child in the classroom today having a hard time, and that caused Luke to be a little sad. He's very sensitive to everything that goes on in the environment. He ate a better lunch today, and actually was the last one up from the table! We had pasta, corn, and apples. He went down great at nap time. Look for a little valentine in his backpack today. He worked hard on it!

First Day of School!!

Today was Luke's first day at Montessori school!! He seemed to really enjoy it - he didn't want to leave when I picked him up!

Here is their curriculum (with my comments):

  • Care of the person (washing hands, brushing teeth and hair, potty training, dressing)
  • Care of the indoor and outdoor environment (cleaning, gardening)
  • Grace and courtesy
  • Movement of objects and furniture
  • Food preparation and community dining (the children make biscuits every day and all share a common meal to expose them to a variety of foods)
  • Enrichment of vocabulary
  • Artistic and musical expression
  • Devleopment of abstraction

Isn't that cute??!!

They have a lovely playground adjacent to his room - he loves to climb and slide over and over again. After I got him home today, he was in such a great mood - giggling and running around. And he was more talkative than I've ever seen him. Here is a video of him doing animal sounds:

He even voluntarily sat on his little potty here at the house - I thought he was going to actually go in it, but not quite. Wow - he may actually be receptive to potty training now after just one day of school! The guide said it usually takes about two weeks to four months for them to master toileting.

And this is a note from his guide (teacher):

Hi Lee! Luke had a wonderful first day today! He is so curious and was very busy all morning. He spent some time at the sink, pouring water in and out of a little pitcher. He also learned how to use the small mop when I showed him how to clean up the water that was spilled. He cleaned windows, and looked at books as well. He said "wow" about twenty times today. It was great. For lunch, we ate pasta with tomato sauce, corn, grapes and biscuits, and he ate a good amount. He was a little sad when it was time to lay down for nap, but Marshal sat with him until he fell asleep. He's doing great!

We also have Beta and Grandpa visiting us this week. Grandpa loves to take Luke for rides in his wagon:

And Luke loves to sit in Beta's lap:

At the park

Luke and Mommy have been going through some nasty colds. But here are some pics from the park last week....
